I'm Chasing a Certification That Won't Save the Planet

I haven't shared this publicly, but this past January I started the slow process of becoming B Corp Certified. "Sustainability", as overused as the word is, has been part of my journey for the last 30 years. And when I learned that B Corp Certification was an option for small businesses, not just Patagonia or Ben & Jerry's, I was all in.

Let me be clear: 𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲. It won't revolutionize the energy grid or undo decades of industrial damage. I know that. And I'm doing it anyway.

If you just wondered: 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘉 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘱 𝘊𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯? Great question. It's a designation given to businesses that meet verified standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Think of it like a Fair Trade label, but for the entire business, not only a product. It means a third party has looked at how a business operates and whether it is intentionally trying to do right by people and the planet, not just shareholders.

Here's the business lesson I keep coming back to: small actions compound. No single decision transforms a business or the world. But every intentional choice stacks and builds momentum. Whether consciously or not, the businesses we build are a direct reflection of what we actually believe.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Yours. Mine. Our businesses'. The environment we're all a little too comfortable ignoring.

So much of how we move through the world is quietly toxic. The food on our plates, the clothes on our backs, the relationships we half-maintain through a screen. We've normalized a lot of things that aren't good for us, and we've disconnected from a lot of things that actually matter.

Going through this process isn't going to create a wave of change overnight. But it opens a door. To conversations. To questions. To maybe one person reading this thinking, huh, I haven't really thought about that.
